The Hardest Day
13th August 1940...
...is known as 'The Hardest Day' of the Battle of Britain.
RAF Manston was heavily attacked on 12th August 1940 and the painting shown here is called 'Manston, 12 August 1940' and is a depiction of that day by renowned artist Gerald Coulson. The station was hit by over 100 bombs and suffered badly.
13th Augst 1940 dawned and saw the Luftwaffe launch an all out attack to destroy the RAF on the ground in an effort to pave the way for the invasion as ground troops waited across the English Channel, ready to sail.
It is only right and fitting that we pay tribute to those air and ground crews who bravely fought off these attacks and remember those who did not survive...
